Pershing History
Pershing Elementary School was named for General John J. Pershing. He frequently visited Lincoln and often listed Lincoln as his home. He came to Lincoln as an instructor of military science at the University of Nebraska, in 1891. General Pershing commanded the American Expeditionary Force (AEF), in Europe, during World War I. He was named General of Armies by a special act of Congress, one rank above the five-star generals of World War I.
Pershing Elementary School celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2005. Pershing was built in 1955, to address the growing needs of the community of Lincoln. Additions to the original structure were made in 1957, a portable added in 1990 and a gymnasium, in 1999. Initial student enrollment was 310 in grades Kindergarten – 4th grade, peaking with 817 students in 1964. Currently, Pershing is host to 460 students in Early Childhood programs through 5th grade. Administrators serving Pershing school include Loretta Mickle (1955-1969), Vern Martin (1969-1974), Bernard Nutt (1974-1987), Marlin Kaufman (1987-1998), Linda Hix (1998-2002) and Paula Baker (2002-2012), Rhonda True (2012-2017) , Jamie Cook (2017-present).
